Brief History
The Society for the Severely Mentally
Handicapped, Selangor and Wilayah
Perseketuan is a voluntary welfare
organization established and registered
with the Register of Societies in 1984
with the objective of providing
rehablitation facilities to children and
youths with severe mental and physical
(multiple) disabilities in Selangor and
Federal Territory. Following this
objective, A Day Care and Training Centre
was set up in June 1985.
The Centre started with a small group of
severely mentally disabled children and
four staff. Today, the Society has nine
full time Staff comprising of an
Administrator, an Assistant
Administrator, an Occupational Therapist,
five Teachers and a Houskeeper and an
enrollment of 15 children on our
Individual Education Program, 9
youths/adults on our Living Skills Group.
The Centre program has expanded from a
simple day care with some physical
activities to the current training
program which provides training to
maximize the children's functional skills
which include motor cognitive,
communication, social and self-help
skills. In the current program, each
child goes through the following phases:-
(i) Individual
Education Program
(ii) Living Skills
Group
(iii) Home Visit Program
Working with the full-time Staff are
volunteers which include pediatricians,
physiotherapist, occupational therapists,
speech therapists, home makers and
representative from regligious and lay
organizations - all of whom have
dedicated invaluable time and services
for the efficient running of the Centre.
Currently, rehablitation services for the
severely mentally disabled are being
provided by both the Government and
private voluntary organizations. However,
it must be emphasized that not all
centres are for those with multiple
disabilities. Hence the Society is trying
it's best to meet the increasing need of
this category of disabled people.
Today, the Society requires an estimate
of RM 250,000/- annually to maintain and
run the Training Centre. Donations
received are mainly from the general
public. The Society also receives annual
government grant and subsidy from the
Department of Social Welfare. Appeals are
made to various organizations to help
meet our annual budget by donating to our
Society. The generous support of many
caring Malaysians has indeed gone a long
way to help us make life more meaningful
for these children.
