| Individual Education Program (IEP) |
|
|
The disabled child attending the Day Care and Training Centre receives an individualized
education program based on his / her learning abilities. This program is drawn based on the
type of skills the child requires in 5 basics areas:
1) Motor Skills
Teaching the child to balance, crawl and walk without support, climb steps. etc.
2) Cognitive Skills
Includes eye contact, learning to sort shapes of different sizes and colours.
3) Self help Skills
Like toilet training, feeding, dressing and drinking without assistance
4) Language and communication skills
Currently we do not have a speech Therapist. However, we do have an advisory panel
consisting of speech Therapist who gives guidelines to our Teachers.
5) Social Skills
Learning communication skills, social interaction through games, and much therapy
Each child has an individualized program that ranges from basic motor / movement skills,
responding to languages / instructions to more advanced skills such as reading, sorting
shapes and colours, writing and sewing skills.
We concentrate only on teaching a few skills at a time. Skill building is done one at a time
until we achieve 80-90% automatic response before going to a new skill.
The Individual Education Program (IEP) is kept at a low teacher / volunteer- student ratio,
i.e 1:5 The child therefore receives a more intensive and individual attention from the teacher /
volunteer. This is vital in ensuring the effectiveness of the IEP.
The children's progress is reviewed every three months by a panel of professionals comprising
of pediatrician and occupational therapist, and the case manager.
Living Skills Group
The older child who has been weaned off the IEP is put on a weekly program to ensure
continuity in the training. Living Skills Group looks at teaching them basic skills for living such
as household cleaning, gardening, social interaction and exercises. It is basically a social
group whereby the disabled have the opportunity to interact with each other and to maintain
skills learned.
Home Visitation Program
Children who have graduated from the Centre's training program and those who are unable to
attend our Day Care Training Centre due to various reasons are put on home visitation program
where the occupational therapist or the teacher will visit the home and draw up a program to
be carried out by the care-giver.The caregiver is taught how to exercise and stimulate the child
to enhance his / her growth.Toys and educational materials are on loan to families to help them
provide the necessary stimulation for the disabled child. Follow up visits are made at regular
intervals to ensure that the programs are being carried out and also to upgrade the programs
as the child improves.
